Essential Travel Guide for Visiting Cancun

A snake’s nest. That is how Cancun has been named, in reference to the Mayan expression. This Mexican city is now one of the world’s most renowned touristic places. Year after year, it is estimated that 3.3 million visitors, both local and international, go to Cancun on their vacation. If you are thinking of eventually going there, this blog will give you some practical advice to reduce the costs of the journey so you can have the perfect vacation. Trust me, if you follow my advice, this trip to Heaven on Earth in Mexico will simply be unforgettable.

Tip #1: Do some research before leaving.

It will help you a great deal to plan ahead and get to know what YOU truly want to visit, eat and have fun doing. Just by visiting a few websites and watching some videos of places you plan on visiting, you will make sure you don’t miss anything. Plus, you will definitely get to see the big picture of what this place can offer.

Tip #2: Get yourself a package deal.

Clearly, if you chose Cancun as your vacation destination, being on the beach and enjoying the seaside is a MUST. Consequently, the hotel you choose as well as the location are quite important. Some hotels can be expensive if booked directly through their websites, however  many travel agencies offer great package deals that include transport, food and activities.

Tip #3: Consider renting a car.

Getting around by taxi or in special transportation can also be expensive in Cancun. In my experience, I found out that it was much cheaper to rent a car to go to all the places I wanted to visit. For example, I rented a basic car for four days for only 1000 MXN (including insurance coverage). Public transport can cost up to 200 MXN / ride. In short, renting a car is a great option to consider if you think plan on moving around.

Tip #4: Book your trip in advance.

Many touristic websites offer lower prices if you book in advance. For example, the following theme parks, Xel-Ha Xplor, Xenses, Xcaret, Xochimilco, Venture Park Tours Tulum, Chichen Itza as well as museums and scuba diving, it is really worth to booking in advance.

Tip #5: Enjoy “all inclusive” packages.

Many places offer all inclusive deals in which accommodation and meals are included in the total cost. It is a great option for you to enjoy everything the place has to offer without worrying about having to spend more money once you are there. If you can find one, I would highly recommend choosing a deal that includes a visit to the Isla Mujeres.

Tip #6: Don’t trust the “off” season.

Because of bad weather conditions, such as rainy season or cooler temperatures, there is a normally less people visiting Cancun at this time of year which is called “off” season. Many people think that they will save loads of money if they travel during this period. Generally speaking, it is true. HOWEVER, you should still book the trip in advance (at least a month). For the “peak” season, we would recommend three months in advance.

Tip #7: Keep in mind that there are many alternatives if you are travelling on a budget.

Most people’s dream is to stay at a resort on the seaside. But, is it absolutely necessary? Those views and locations have a price and for many it would be better to limit the expenses. Well, it is possible to find an alternative to the luxurious five stars hotels without impacting the quality of your vacation. In fact, there are many hotels close to the beach and other touristic attractions and I’m convinced that everyone can find a nice place that really suits their needs.

Tip #8: At night, go out. But with a budget.

My last advice, but not the least. Cancun is definitely a place to go out at night and enjoy the “fiesta” time. Renowned for the “Tequila, Cerveza & Playa”, you absolutely have to enjoy Cancun’s nightlife. However, when you go out, I would recommend only taking cash and only the amount of money you really want to spend. It is a good idea to exchange your Canadian dollars before leaving to pay for all the extras that are not included in your package deal. Reserve your Mexican pesos online through Click & Collect to make sure your currencies are ready for you before departure and to get the best exchange rate with no fees!
